The primary objective of our research was to examine the interactions of cell cultures (hepatocytes, bone marrow mesenchynal stromal cell mixed cultures) with nanofiber-based materials, which can be utilized as carriers for high density cultures, and to test the possibility of creating a polarized hepatocyte culture on a nanofiber layer., separating two compartments with a different composition of the cultivation medium (simulating the capillary and bile compartments of the hepatic tissue). The results reported demonstrate that nonwoven nanofiber layers are a suitable biocompatible support for functional, hepatocyte cultures and can be utilized in a laboratory bioreactor; mesenchymal stromal cells from bone marrow may be utilized in order to enhance hepatocyte functionality on the nanofiber layers.
