AnnotationComparing the experimental data to many-body calculations we have identified the strong excitation around 3.5 eV as Zhang-Rice singlet excitation on neighbouring CuO4 plaquettes. The strong temperature dependence of this excitation enables us to probe short-range spin correlations on the 1 meV scale with outstanding sensitivity.
