AnnotationThe paper inquires into the attitude towards nature in the works of several contemporary Tamil writers. It notices how often and in what respect they mention trees, flowers or animals. In majority of cases these subjects seem to play only a marginal role, they are usually used just to evoke a particular place or area. Animals are sometimes used as a tool for description of human qualities. The paper pays special attention to Sa. Kandasamy and Ambai, who are an exception to this rule. In they works nature is mention frequently and plays an important role, positive attitude towards nature is easily discernible. Especially in the works of Sa. Kandasamy, interest in nature is strongly felt. Often we come across minute descriptions as well as enumeration of names of trees, bushes etc. In case of Ambai, the call for protection of environment can also be found.
