Two closely related genes encoding α-amylase in I. typographus were characterized and named AmyA and AmyB. The two α-amylase genes represent potentially beneficial nuclear markers comprised of the sequences encoding key metabolic enzymes and highly variable neutral introns, which can reveal valuable information on the genetic structure of Ips typographus populations.
