AnnotationThe role of surface chemistry at the ceramic/electrolyte interface at the electrode surface in the electrical breakdown of water using metallic rod electrodes coated by a thin layer of porous ceramic (composite electrodes) was investigated. A comparison was made between two types of ceramics, oxide (corundum) and silicate (almandine) and a series of experiments was performed under various operating conditions. Processes at the electrolyte/ceramic surface interface and their role in electrical breakdown of water using porous ceramic-coated electrodes are discussed.
