Aphanizomenon platensis was described from the watershed of rivers Parana and Uruguay about 90 years ago by Seckt. It has a very specific morphology and ecology, but it was not revised from that time. In last years, it forms important populations in the same area as a part of water blooms. In the present study are the modern data about its variation and distribution. It is probably endemic for this region.
