Decreased frequency of heterocyte and akinete formation was observed in cultures of T. variabilis exposed for 10 days to environmentally relevant concentrations of microcystins (2-20 ug/L). These results indicate that microcystins may alter processes of conservation, overwintering or nitrogen fixation in filamentous cyanobacteria and thus play an important role in chemical-mediated interspecific interactions and/or signaling.
