AnnotationBefore 1989, feminism in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe was defined as an ideology that undermined the unity of the working class and the effort to achieve communism. The issue of “the position of women in socialist society” was publicly discussed and was even on the research agenda, but it was impossible to develop a critical analysis of gender relations. This chapter examines the background and development of gender knowledge and gender studies in Czech society.
