Children heard short sentences that contained the correct verb form, or an incorrectly inflected verb form. They were asked to press a button when they heard a pre-specified target word, which followed the violating verb form. Children’s monitoring times increased when the target followed an incorrect second-person verb form, but not when it followed an incorrectly used third-or first-person verb form. The results suggest that isolated morphological violations only affect word monitoring when they lead to incorrect phonetic analysis of words, but not otherwise.
