AnnotationAdhesion and cohesion belong to one of the most important parameters which characterize endurance of thermal spray coatings. Various methods are available nowadays for adhesion/cohesion assessment. However, none of them can be considered as universal. A newly adapted pin test method was developed at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (IPP) and used to determine adhesion/cohesion strength of alumina coatings deposited on steel substrate using water stabilized plasma (WSP) spraying technique. Dominant failure micromechanisms were evaluated using fractographic analysis. Tests carried out proved repeatability of the pin test and its reliability as comparative test for adhesion/cohesion assessment of thermal spray coatings.
