AnnotationCylindrical sample of human trabecular bone has been incrementally compressed and its deformed microstructure captured using time-lapse microtomography. From the captured projections the deformed microstructure has been reconstructed and the displacement and deformation fields computed using a digital volume correlation (DVC) method. The approach is based on a modified Lucas-Kanade algorithm and optimized for accuracy. Displacement and strain fields are then compared to a FE model of the sample subjected to the same boundary conditions and loaded similarly with the experiment. Precision of the method is assessed using artificially deformed micro-CT images as well as data from the compression test. Results show possibility of used DVC algorithm to capture the displacements and strains in trabecular bone microstructure with high accuracy when a high-resolution X-ray detector is used.
