Description in EnglishHelena Nosková presents a picture of the period of collectivisation in the Czech border region in the 1950s based on research in domestic and foreign archives. This picture may not be comprehensive, but it captures well everything that was substantial for the formation of social ties in the changing community of the border region. She shows how the border region remained a territory of marginal regions where the immigrated population alternated with each new five-year plan and labour recruitment campaign. The same was true in education, where “unified school” destroyed the original education system based on the needs of regions; and the fluctuation of teachers became far more so than on average in the inland parts of the country. The study cites frequently from archive documents, succinctly characterising the atmosphere of that time and the quirky practices of the party bodies unsuccessfully managing the settlement of the border region according to their political aims.
