AnnotationIn microalgal biotechnology, aimed to the production of biomass, high-value products, or even bio-fuels, has prompted the application of on-line measurements for monitoring growth and obtaining rapid evidence of unfavourable conditions affecting the performance of outdoor cultures. The aim of this chapter is to provide a simple, practical guide to the use of chlorophyll fluorescence for microalgal biotechnologists who wish to apply this technique in microalgal mass cultures, both in field and laboratory studies. Whilst the principles behind the measurements will be mentioned briefly, the emphasis will be given to the applications and limitations of this technique for monitoring in situ and its implications
