The nutrient concentrations are comparable to eutrophic water and the algae are observed in areas with increased phosphorus concentration at the margins of a snow field. The measurements of the variable chlorophyll fluorescence revealed only minor photoinhibition. Although the photochemical parameters (Fv/Fm, rETRmax and alpha) are negatively correlated with air temperature, PAR and UVR, the saturation irradiance was not affected. Flagellate cells of Chloromonas cf. nivalis protect themseves against excessive PAR+UVR by active migration in snow.
