AnnotationThe environment of the snow algae community is characterized by stable snow temperature and variable PAR and UVR. The nutrient concentrations are comparable to eutrophic water and the algae are observed in areas with increased phosphorus concentration at the margins of a snow field. The measurements of the variable chlorophyll fluorescence revealed only minor photoinhibition. Although the photochemical parameters (Fv/Fm, rETRmax and alpha) are negatively correlated with air temperature, PAR and UVR, the saturation irradiance was not affected. Flagellate cells of Chloromonas cf. nivalis protect themseves against excessive PAR+UVR by active migration in snow.
