AnnotationThe profound effect of the solvent on the photochemistry has been known for a long time. In 1936, Franck and Rabinowitch introduced the concept of the cage effect to explain the lowering of the iodine photodissociation yield upon solvation. More generally, the slowing down the molecular fragments and preventing the molecules from the dissociation by the solvent cage are manifestations of solvent induced photostability.
