FISH, Southern hybridisation and sequencing data collectively point to a single origin for units containing the retrotransposon fragment. It is likely that units containing the putative retroelement increased in copy number and dispersed via rDNA homogenisation mechanisms, rather than by multiple retrotransposition events.
