| Annotation | V české literární historii stále chybí kritický pohled na poválečnou interpretaci avantgardy či avantgardních hnutí, na jejich specifickou situaci, uměleckou roztříštěnost a politický výklad. Diskuse o surrealismu poskytuje v české poválečné kulturní historii obraz spletitého a dramatického vývoje vztahu k pojmu uměleckých avantgard. Oficiální dobová ideologie socialistické kultury pokládala pojem surrealismu za synonymní s buržoazním, tedy anti-socialistickým uměním. Název Symboly obludností (odkazující k plánované, ale zrušené surrealistické výstavě z roku 1966) se stal času odolávajícím vyjádřením společenské atmosféry, kde stály každodenní a časem téměř samozřejmé obludnosti pod žárlivou ochranou tabuizované terminologie.

| Description in English | Czech literary history still lacks a critical perspective on the postwar interpretation of the avant-garde or of avant-garde movements and their specific plight, artistic fragmentation and political readings. Czech postwar cultural history offers an intriguing and dramatic relationship to the notion of avant-garde art movements trough discussion of how to conceive of surrealism. For the ideology of the official socialist culture at the time, the term „surrealism“ was synonymous with „bourgeois“ – it was anti-socialist art. The title „Symbols of Monstrosity“ (the exhibition of surrealism in 1966 was called off) has became, despite the years, a direct expression of the social environment in which everyday and almost matter-of-course monstrosities were outwardly protected quite jealously by taboo notions.
