Divadelní fakulta AMU v Praze se po roce 1993, když musela z ekonomických důvodů opustit objekt v Karlově ulici, ocitla bez vlastní scény. Po období stěhování a hledání nakonec vedení školy rozhodlo, že by si škola měla postavit divadlo vlastní. Vznikl tak projekt "SOS DAMU" pro výstavbu nového divadla. Místem pro novostavbu se stal dvůr budovy DAMU mezi Karlovou a Řetězovou ulicí. Divadlo Disk vznikalo v letech 1996–1998 v režii architektů Karla Hubáčka ze Sialu s. r. o. Liberec a Jiřího Hakulína z libereckého A&D Studia. Mašinistický vnější tvar "ponorky" má ladit s účelem studentského divadla. Sám autor Karel Hubáček divadlo nazývá "Nautilus". Stavba je zajímavá především svým citlivým zapojením do okolní historické zástavby, využitím materiálů a vnější formou charakteristickou pro SIAL. Description in English Disk theatre, Karel Hubáček, Jiří Hakulín, 1996-1998, Karlova Street 223/26, Prague 1 - Staré Město. In 1993 the theatre faculty of AMU in Prague (Academy of Performing Arts) had to leave the Disk theatre building in 8 Karlova Street and therefore found itself without its own stage. The site of the new building was the courtyard of the DAMU building also in Karlova Street, more exactly in a block between Karlova and Řetězová Street. Disk Theatre was set up during 1996–1998 under the direction of architects Karel Hubáček of Sial Liberec and Jiří Hakulín of Liberec’s A&D Studio. The building is interesting above all for its sensitive insertion into the surrounding historical development, and for the use of materials and an external form characteristic of Sial. The Machine Style exterior shape of a ‘submarine’ was to harmonise with the purpose of the students’ theatre. Designer Karel Hubáček himself called the theatre ‘Nautilus’.
