AnnotationIn rat anterior pituitary tissue, mRNA transcripts for the P2X4 subunit are the most abundant and the P2X4 protein is expressed. Extracellular ATP induces ivermectin-sensitive depolarizing current in a majority of thyrotropin-releasing hormone-responsive pituitary cells, and enhances prolactin release. These results indicate that lactotrophs express homomeric and/or heteromeric P2X4 receptors which facilitate hormone secretion
