AnnotationRecently, condensed bicyclic compound containing butenolide moiety isolated from plant smoke, called smoke compound, was reported as a compound increasing germinantion. Related butenolide, 3,4,5-trimethylfuran-2(5H)-one, which inhibits germination and significantly reduces the efect of smoke compound, also isolated from plant smoke, is decsribed here.
