AnnotationProperties of excited states of aryl carotenoids were investigated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. By comparing excited-state dynamics of carotenoids with conjugated aryl rings, isorenieratene, b-isorenieratene and chlorobactene with their non-aryl counterparts, we have identified specific spectral properties associated with the conjugated aryl group. Since aryl carotenoids are often found in chlorosomes of green sulfur bacteria, potential importance of the aryl group for assembly and energy transfer in chlorosomes is discussed.
