Description in English The apocryphal Apocalypse of Peter is one of the best sources regarding descriptions of infernal punishments for sinners. In the Ethiopian version, which is primary "testimony" of the text, punishments are characterized as being eternal and are based on the retributive justice principal – to each according to his deeds. The hopelessness of the concept in that the sinners' pleas for mercy are rejected because it is too late for repentance questions the interpretation of a separately preserved Greek fragment of the Apocalypse of Peter. The interpretation, influenced most likely by Plato's dialogue Phaedo, introduces the possibility for sinners of redemption from their punishments through the intercession of the righteous. Although this was an accepted practice of the early church, it seems that without the authority of Plato and his concept of the purification of sinful souls, the Apocalypse of Peter would be know as a bleak Early Christian text, which offers no chance to sinners.
