These compounds, termed mitocans, destabilise mitochondria and cause apoptosis, which is, at least in some cases, selective for cancer cells. Thus, novel drugs offer substantial promise as potent and effective clinical treatments with minimal side-effects. The chapter on mitochondria as targets for cancer therapy is included in the book presenting thorough analyses of mitochondrial dysfunction as one of the hallmarks of cancer and discussing the clinical implications of cancer mitochondrial defects Workplace Institute of Biotechnology Contact Monika Kopřivová, Monika.Koprivova@ibt.cas.cz, Tel.: 325 873 700 Year of Publishing 2010
