AnnotationSonication can influence electrochemical processes mainly by several mechanisms. Whereas acoustic streaming can reduce the thickness of diffusion layer to several micrometers, the turbulent movement can reduce it to about 1 micro m. Only the mass transfer enhancement due to microjects can result in a decrease of diffusion layer thickness far under one micrometer up to about 1 micro m. Moreover, pressure pulses evoked by microjects can result in activation of the electrode by removing passivating films and absorbed products from the electrode surface. That is why the generation of the highest possible number of microjects is desirable when an intense sonoelectrochemical effect is wanted.
