AnnotationThe chapter is focused on the development of the position of women in the labour market and on the development of the conditions for work-life balance in the workplace historically from the 1950s to the present. We argue that the high employment of women does not automatically imply women’s emancipation and fulfilment of their rights as citizens in a society based on a gender contract with the gendered arrangements of work and care as conflicting spheres. This chapter is based on the study of historical statistics, law, and available survey data.
