Studie Miroslava Vaňka analyzuje postavení dělníků v socialistickém Československu 70. a 80. let. Všímá si, jak dělníci sami vidí proklamované vedoucí postavení "dělnické třídy" v rámci tehdejší společnosti. Autor ve své interpretaci vychází z hierarchie sdělovaných hodnot, v jejímž rámci se soustředí na analýzu rodiny, volného času, vnímání kolektivu kontra vnímání individualismu, a v rozhovorech akcentovanou hrdost na "svůj" podnik. V další části předložené práce se autor zaměřil na vnímání historie a prožitek času u příslušníků dělnických profesí, centrem této části je srovnání předlistopadového období s dneškem, a rovněž vztah k vládnoucí třídě a politice obecně. Pokusem o specifikaci identity dělníka jako příslušníka "vládnoucí třídy" v období normalizace uzavírá autor svůj článek, který je zároveň závěrečnou studií této publikace.

M. Vaněk tries to show what it was like to be a manual worker in socialist Czechoslovakia in the seventies and eighties. He analyses how the workers reflected on their proclaimed ostensible role as privileged members of the leading "working class". In his attempt to identify a "typical" worker he follows the hierarchy of values articulated in the narratives, especially on the themes of family, free time, individual vs. collective, and the often emphasized loyalty to the company. In the second part of his essay, the author focuses on how the workers interpret history and the flow of time. The central cathegories here are the constant comparison with "now" (post 1989) and "then" (the normalization period). He also considers the attitude and relation of workers toward the establishment and politics in general. In the view of this testimony, the author describes the ironic position and identity of manual workers as members of the "ruling class" in the period of the normalization.
