AnnotationHigh diversity of termites in soil ecosystems is difficult to explain by niche theory, as there is little evidence for spatial or temporal separation between species. Using beta13C and beta15N isotopic ratios, we confirmed significant differences in feeding habits among species of the Anoplotermes-group. Our data are showing that sympatric soldierless soil-feeding termites feed on distinct components of the soil. Feeding niche differentiation can therefore account for the high species richness and diversity of soldierless soil-feeding termites in neotropical rainforests.
