V principu jsou pro rozvoj větrné energetiky vhodné pouze lokality, kde je dostatečný větrný potenciál pro ekonomicky životaschopné projekty větrných elektráren. Hlavní technické limity zahrnují dostupnost a dostatečnou kapacitu elektrické sítě, dopravní dostupnost, interakci s radary a letectvím, ochranu elektrických vedení a další infrastruktury a ochranu před rizikem pádu námrazy. Mnoho z těchto limitů lze technicky řešit, záleží však na nákladnosti takového řešení. Dalším zásadním faktorem jsou environmentální limity. I přes všechna tato omezení zůstává potenciál větrné energie značně vysoký a zvláště v globálním měřítku je jediným skutečně limitujícím faktorem schopnost elektroenergetické soustavy efektivně přenést a spotřebovat či konzervovat kolísající výkon větrných elektráren. Description in English Article summarizes main technical limits of wind energy development. Basically, only locations where wind conditions allow economically viable wind energy projects are suitable for wind energy development. The main technical limitations include: sufficient capacity of grid connection, availability of acceptable roads, interaction with radars and aviation, protection of very high voltage lines and icing issues. Many of these limitations can be technically solved, however this is limited by price paid for it and eventually by environmental limits. Environmental limits and social issues are the other crucial factors limiting the wind energy development. In spite of all this, the wind energy potential remains very high and especially in global point of view the only real limiting factor is the ability of energy network to effectively transport, consume or conserve the fluctuating output of wind energy.
