Optical absorption measurements evidenced that in oxidizing conditions Cerium is preferably incorporated inside the silica matrix as Ce4+ while the trivalent state is favoured by reducing conditions. Transmission electron microscopy images show rare-earth clusters formation whose nature was investigated by means of Raman, EDS and microdiffraction measurements.
