AnnotationThe paper proposes a novel mechanism of satellite repeat evolution in plant genomes by amplification of tandem repeats generated within 3' untranslated region of LTR-retrotransposons. Extensive sequence variability including occurrence of various tandemly repeated motifs was found to be a feature of Tat linneage of Ty3/gypsy elements, and some of these tandemly repeated sequences were found to be amplified into arrays of satellite DNA.
