AnnotationThe study analyses cultural and artistic milieu of the monasteries of the order of the Franciscan Observants in the second half of the 15th– first half of the 16th century. During his short mission, John Capistran managed to invigorate the order, as is evident from the growth in the number of Franciscan monasteries. This building activity was supported by Czech Catholic aristocracy, who saw it as an opportunity to fulfil their political ambitions. A typical architectural feature of an Franciscan monasteries was the diamond vault, there were also rich libraries, wonderful wall-paintings on new themes, and superb tomb sculpture. Monasteries were important cultural centres filled with major works of Late Gothic art commissioned by the founders.
