AnnotationA detailed examination of pea (Pisum sativum L.) simple sequence repeat loci revealed that a large part of them is associated with retrotransposon sequences. Further investigation revealed that they are embedded within LTRs of Angela-like elements which are conserved among many taxa of higher plants. It has been demonstrated that this association can result in amplification and dispersion of SSRs in plant genomes.
