    AnnotationWe use semiempirical approaches based on the extended Hückel method to calculate the energy-level scheme of the cluster containing Ce and its nearest O neighbors in true RAlO3 (R=La, Gd, Y, and Lu) structures. Our calculations show a different origin for the energy levels involved in the absorption process than might intuitively be suggested.
