AnnotationComplementary DNA sequences of three main plant DNA (cytosine-5) methylatransferase genes (MET1, CMT3, DRM) were cloned and sequenced from Nicotiana sylvestris and Nicotiana tomentosiformis, maternal and paternal progenitors of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) respectively. All methyltransferase parental genes had been inherited in tobacco where they were additively expressed in all examined tissues. Methylation analysis of several repetitive sequences showed similar levels of 5-methylcytosine in tobacco and its progenitor species.
