Both criteria fulfill a specific condition conveniently expressed for compressible flows in terms of the invariants of the deviatoric part of the velocity-gradient tensor. It should be noted that if the Q-criterion is a priori redefined in terms of a deviatoric part of the strain-rate tensor, it will also be applicable to compressible flows.
