AnnotationUsing 3D confocal microscopy two astrocyte populations differently responding to ischemia were described in the cortex of GFAP/EGFP mice; the first displaying a significant volume increase and the second displaying only a small volume changes during ischemia. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that the diverse expression of Kir4.1 channels and GFAP as well as differences in taurine accumulation might contribute to the distinct ability of astrocytes to regulate their volume.
