Oxidation of the molten carbide was prevented by a nitrogen protective atmosphere, during deposition onto substrates placed immediately above a liquid nitrogen level. Analysis of both deposits and solidified free-flight particles determined the W:W2C:WC ratios and their mechanical properties, especially in dependence on the feedstock particle size.
