The first approach consists in the fabrication of preforms for fiber drawing through the preparation of monolitic gels. The second one is based on the application of thin layers into substrate tubes, their thermal treatment and viscous transformation into preforms of optical fibers under the effect of the surface tension. The paper discusses principles and main results of these approaches.
