Description in English Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is one of the latest development stages of scanning electron microscopy. Its origin is dated fromthe beginning of nineteen seventies, when the object of interest of many research workers, e.g. Monterieff etc. [1,2] and Robinson [3] was to remove the electric charge from the surface of non-conductive specimens and to lead gases into the specimen chamber. It has been found, that as a consequence of ionization collisions of atoms and molecules of gases with electrons no surface negative charge demonstrates on the insulation specimen, as this charge is compensated by the collision ions. The compensation of electric charge enables direct observation of electrically non-charging samples without their coating with an electrically conductive layer.
