AnnotationMicrobioassays are typical non-specific tests. The toxicity signal results from the whole spectrum of consequences, especially, when phytoplankton biomass is tested for toxins. Embryotoxicity, genotoxicity and mutagenity, immunotoxicity ,cytotoxicity and other toxic cyanobacterial metabolites can be tested by specific miniaturised biosystems. Typical problems occur when general ecotoxicity tests are used for the pre-screening of cyanotoxins. Bacterial tests were found as quite unreliable because no correlation with dose response of main toxins was found. Extracts of cyanobacterial biomass provide a number of interpretation problems also for crustacean and protozoan species, which were found to be sensitive for cyanotoxins. We developed system for the fractionation of biomass. The fraction of toxins, pigments and other metabolites are separed by C-18 cartridges and molecular sieves (10.000MV) and are tested by biological assays. Mortality of Thamnocephalus or Daphnia in crude cyanobacterial extracts can be caused for example by the lack of oxygen or other factors which have no consequences with the cyanotoxins. However, microbiotests using fractionated biomass can be used as pre-screening of cyanotoxins in drinking water supply or recreational water bodies.Microbiotests for cyanotoxins toxicity pre-screening.
