AnnotationThe aim of the study was to examine the phagocyte-derived production of reactive oxygen species, the expression of surface receptors and the total peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidant potential of plasma in patients with regular hemodialysis. The decline of reactive oxygen species generation and the increased expression of CD11b both on neutrophils and monocytes was found after hemodialysis. The antioxidant potential of plasma before hemodialysis treatment was higher when compared with healthy controls. However, it decreased significantly even below this of healthy controls after the treatment. In conclusion, chemiluminiscence can be a very important tool for the assessment of various parameters of oxidative stress. Decreased peroxyl radical-trapping antioxidant potential of plasma indicates insufficient antioxidant defence in patients with chronic renal failure
