The ion exchange was done at temperatures in the transformation region of used glasses to minimise internal strain that arose in the layers during the fabrication process and - together with highly mobile Li+ ions present in the glass - to accelerate migration of rather immobile Er3+ ions. The formed layers are discussed from the point of view of effect of the glass composition on the total amount of erbium introduced into the glass surface. The annealing process (heating of the samples in air) was applied after the ion exchange to deepen the Er-doped layers and to decrease surface concentration of Er3+ ions as it is expected to improve luminescence properties of the layers. Emission spectra of the layers are discussed regarding to the particular shape of the erbium concentration profile.
