Kolektivní monografie analyzuje procesy mnemonické kanonizace J. A. Komenského (1592-1670) v průběhu 19. a 20. století v rámci několika typů vzpomínkových společenství (národní, konfesijní, profesní, regionální, genderové). Kolektivní, resp. sociální paměť chápe jako rozsáhlý soubor kulturních praxí, s jejichž pomocí společenství generují významy, organizují svou historickou zkušenost, vytvářejí si představy o sobě, a zajišťují tak současně i svou kontinuitu a koherenci. Práce vychází z konceptu 'míst paměti', jak jej v polovině 80. let 20. století založil Pierre Nora, reflektuje však i zásadní posuny, jichž tento koncept doznal v rámci paměťových studií během následujících desetiletí. Soustředí se přitom na tři základní okruhy otázek: 1. vztah paměti a identity, 2. vztah paměti a vědy (včetně muzealizace) a 3. vztah paměti a médií.

The volume analyses the ways in which the figure of J. A. Comenius (1592-1670) was canonised during the 19th and 20th centuries as one of the central mnemonic icons within several types of social communities (national, confessional, professional, local/regional, gender). It conceives memory as an extensive set of cultural practices which help communities generate meanings, organize their historical experience, form images about themselves, and thus ensure at the same time their continuity and consistency. The monograph is based on the concept of the 'sites of memory' (Pierre Nora), but it reflects also fundamental shifts, which this concept has undergone within memory studies over the recent decades. It focuses on three main issues: the relationship between remembrance and identities (1), the relationship between memory and Comenius studies, including musealisation (2), and the relationship between memory and media (3).
