We present novel ideas for integrated modelling infrastructures, particularly pertinent to the plasma physics and fusion community. Central to our approach are 1) interactive, open-source scientific computing, which is now dominated by Python, 2) efficient and flexible, in-core or distributed data communication across different programming languages and 3) dataflow based modular workflows. Our HDC (Hierarchical Dynamic Containers) library provides the required data communication functionality. For dataflow based programming, we have prototyped an actor-based WOrkfloW framework in Python—WOWP. We show that our approach has a good performance while leveraging rapid development, flexibility and interactivity. We present our pilot applications, including WPCD type actors in a workflow, pedestal MHD stability chain prototype or interfaces to existing physics codes.
