Hookworms of the Ancylostomatidae in African great apes comprise two subfamilies, Ancylostomatinae represented by Ancylostoma duodenale (more species described in humans) and Bunostominae that involves four species of the genus Necator. Eggs found in the feces cannot be differentiated and are mostly referred to as hookworms or simply (and the most correctly) as strongylid eggs. These soil-transmitted nematodes are important because of both their zoonotic potential and possible pathogenicity.
