Kapitola postihuje logiku geneze státních útvarů v ekologickém a kulturním kontextu poloostrovní Indie v období vrcholného středověku, popisuje střet existujících státních struktur s expandujícím islamizovaným impériem dillíského sultanátu a od něj se odvíjející rekonfiguraci regionálních mezistátních vztahů i vnitřních mocenských struktur států nově vzniklých v důsledku tohoto konfliktu. V tomto kontextu pak analyzuje budování obrazu vládce, jenž usiluje o legitimitu v očích jak vlastního ovládaného obyvatelstva, tak i zahraničních subjektů v širší oblasti Indického oceánu a islámského světa, s nimiž Vidžajanagar navazoval od poloviny 14. století intenzivní kulturní, ekonomické i politické styky.

The chapter on Vijayanagar traces the logic of state formation in the ecological and cultural context of peninsular India in the High Middle Ages. It first describes the clash of existing regional state structures with the expanding islamicate empire of the Delhi sultanate and succeeeding reconfiguration of regional inter-state relations on the one hand, and changes in internal power-structures of new states arising in the wake of this conflict. The outlined context serves as a basis for analysis of public image that rulers of Vijayanagar tried to create in order to confirm and enhance their legitimacy vis-a-vis their own subjects, as well as outside powers of the larger Indian ocean area and Islamic world, with which the state maintained intensive cultural, economic and political relations.
