Pro křesťany bylo pohanství po staletí předmětem teologických disputací a synonymem pro falešné náboženství, barbarské uctívání mnoha bohů a úpadkem morálky. Od konce osvícenství jsou stará božstva a mýty zdrojem romantických představ a inspirací pro okultní skupiny i evropská národní hnutí. Ve dvacátém století vzniká moderní pohanství – nové náboženství, které se snaží rekonstruovat předkřesťanské tradice a navázat na ně. Nicméně mezi ním a předkřesťanskými tradicemi leží tisíciletá propast a naše poznání je limitované. Co to znamená, když se dnes lidé vrací k předkřesťanským tradicím? Jak a pomocí čeho je obnovují? A je to vůbec možné? Kniha Pavla Horáka představuje první českou studii tematiky pohanství, kombinující historickou analýzu s terénním výzkumem mezi moderními pohany v několika evropských státech. Description in English Magical rituals, the old deities of pre-Christian religions, living in harmony with nature, but also idolatry, blood sacrifices, and devil worship... these and many other images and emotions come to mind when one says paganism. For Christians, paganism has been a subject of theological debate for centuries and a synonym for false religion, barbaric worship of many gods, and moral decay. Since the end of the Enlightenment, ancient deities and myths have been a source of romantic imagination and inspiration for occult groups and European national movements. The twentieth century witnessed the emergence of Modern Paganism, a new religion that seeks to reconstruct and revive pre-Christian traditions. However, there is a millennial gap between it and pre-Christian traditions, and our knowledge is limited. What does it mean when people today return to pre-Christian traditions? How and by what means are they recovering them? And is this even possible? Pavel Horák's book is the first Czech study of paganism, combining historical analysis with field research among modern pagans in several European countries.
