AnnotationThis presentation briefly reviewed encapsulation of living cells and their parts into silica since 1971 to present. A developement of techniques from entrapment into prepolymerized tetraethoxysilane to biomimetic silaffin silicatein-catalyzed encapsulation was shown. Influences of sol-gel encapsulation on cell physiology were summarized and the most succesfull biosensors and biocatalyst with silica matrices were exemplified.
