Many advantages have been reported for immobilized cells e.g. higher biomass concentration, resistance against higher pollutants concentration, protective influence of carrier, easier separation and storage stability. Cells which are able to degrad phenol have been immobilized in different organic matrices and on inorganic carriers. Entrapment of whole living cells in inorganic matrix was realized by sol - gel process. The aim of this work was to study the viability of cells immobilized in a silica film and their ability to degrade phenol.
