Kapitola zkoumá historické a teoretické souvislosti mezi kompozitní fotografií 19. století a současnými obrazy generovanými umělou inteligencí. Navazuje na experimenty Francise Galtona a sleduje propojení statistického myšlení s vizuální reprezentací – od eugenických typologií k modelům strojového učení. Mediálně-archeologický rozbor ukazuje, že generativní umělá inteligence rozvíjí Galtonovu snahu syntetizovat variabilitu, ovšem přesouvá ji z fyzických tváří do datových abstrakcí. Studie odhaluje trvalé napětí mezi individualitou, typem a pravděpodobností v obrazové kultuře.

The chapter explores the historical and conceptual links between 19th-century composite photography and contemporary AI-generated images. Revisiting Francis Galton’s photographic experiments, it traces how statistical reasoning and visual representation intertwine—from early eugenic typologies to modern machine learning models. Through media-archaeological analysis, the chapter shows that generative AI continues Galton’s ambition to synthesize and model variability, yet shifts it from physical faces to data abstractions. The study reveals a persistent tension between individuality, typology, and probability in visual culture.
